A year after losing her husband, Tenisha Warner is now fighting for what she says he always intended to provide for her and their daughter.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner died in a drowning accident in Costa Rica on July 20, 2025. He was 54. A year later, his widow Tenisha has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $1.2 million from his estate, alleging the prenuptial agreement they signed in 2022 was never fulfilled.

The claims include an unpaid $1 million life insurance policy, missed monthly payments, an unfunded retirement account, and back pay for her role as his chief of staff.

Tenisha says Malcolm "had every intention" of honoring their agreement and was in the process of updating an estate plan that had not been changed since 1996, when he was only 26 years old, before he passed.

"I have been struggling to care for our daughter as a single mom and now as her sole provider," she said. "Legally, I had no choice but to take action to protect our rights."

This story is a reminder for all of us. Estate plans, life insurance, and updated beneficiary designations are not just for the wealthy. They are how we protect the people we love when we can no longer be there ourselves.
