As more local governments in Alabama rush to restrict new data centers, Democrats running for the state’s top two elected offices are calling for a statewide ban – at least temporarily.

“That has become such a lightning rod issue,” Jones said in a recent call with Ensler. “It’s just time the state took some action and said let’s put a pause on this. We need to put a moratorium on any building, any new permits, anything like that right now so we can put some guardrails up.”

At least seven cities are enforcing those temporary bans: Leeds, Fort Payne, Homewood, Cullman, Springville, Chelsea and Fairfield. Birmingham’s initial pause expired once the city added restrictions to the industry in its zoning policy. Other cities, including Columbiana, Hoover and Athens have changed their zoning to address data centers without pausing development.
