Valencia keeps opening beautiful new places while still holding on to its relaxed Mediterranean character.

This is not an official “best restaurants” ranking just places I tried, liked and would return to.

Breakfast & coffee

Kohi Café — syrniki, brunch and a little taste of Ukraine.

Pasqual + Sheila — Ukrainian-founded café near Plaza de la Reina. Great for breakfast, coffee and cakes. And borsch.

TATEL Valencia — elegant Spanish food, beautiful interiors and live music.

Healthy food

Begin — beautiful interiors and several locations around the city. Basically like Honest Greens but in restaurant version.

My honest opinion: I didn’t love the food, although the restaurants are always full, so clearly many people disagree with me.

Paella

Casa Carmela — a Valencia institution run by the same family for four generations. Paella is cooked over orange wood, and the Valencian version should be ordered in advance.

Gran Mercat — easier to book and excellent for traditional Valencian paella with chicken, rabbit and snails.

Trotamundos, Only YOU Hotel — stylish cocktails in the city centre.

Barceló Valencia rooftop — drinks with views over the City of Arts and Sciences.

Atenea Sky — €10 entrance and one of the best sunset views over central Valencia.

Mercabañal — an open-air food market with tapas, burgers, bao, pizza and drinks. Perfect for groups.
