We’ve Got to Talk About #Hazing

According to the #AssociatedPress, a U.S. Secret Service agent and two other men were charged with violent felonies after authorities say a fraternity hazing ritual in South Florida left two hospitalized.

That should stop us in our tracks.

Not just because a federal agent is accused, but because too many of us know how this culture survives.

I used to defend hazing. I believed it had value. I believed there were lessons in the process, that it molded people, and that if something meant something, you had to work for it.

And I still believe work matters.

But #BlackGreek life has to stop protecting violence.

The process has lost its guardrails. Anything left unguarded will eventually get out the gate and become dangerous.

Part of the danger is how different the experience can become from chapter to chapter when accountability is weak. Some chapters haze. Some do not. Some lines experience one thing, others something different.

That inconsistency does not create brotherhood or sisterhood. It creates risk.

We cannot keep hiding behind “we are a non-hazing organization” while knowing there are rooms and off-campus spaces where something else is happening.

I love Black Greek life too much to pretend its wounds are not real.

And while we ignore it, others use our worst behavior as evidence against us. Some voices use religious or spiritual language to convince members that Black Greek life itself is rooted in false worship, and hazing becomes one of their strongest entry points.

We are giving them too much material.

If our organizations are going to survive with integrity, we need change from the inside out.

Let people work. Let them study history. Let them serve communities. Let them learn leadership and accountability from older members who understand what these organizations were created to build.

But stop confusing pain with purpose.

The legal consequences are too high. The spiritual damage is too real. The risk is too high for us to keep pretending this is just tradition.

Letters should build people, not break them.
