On Wednesday, #OprahWinfrey announced the closure of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, marking the end of nearly 20 years of operation. The decision aims to shift the focus towards an expanded scholarship program.

According to a statement from Oprah, the academy will cease operations at the end of the 2027 academic year. Following this, the Gauteng Department of Education will continue to manage the school, as mentioned in the original partnership agreement. The academy plans to graduate two more classes of students before this transition occurs. Any remaining students who have not completed their education by that time will be placed in other top-tier schools, with Winfrey covering their full tuition until graduation.

In place of the campus, Winfrey intends to launch an expanded scholarship program that aims to reach more girls across South Africa than one school could accommodate. In her statement, she emphasized, “The dream was never simply to build a school.
