China has developed a fusion magnet that could become one of the most powerful ever created, reportedly capable of storing around 3 times more energy than components used in the massive ITER fusion project.

The 582-ton toroidal field magnet recently completed full-scale testing at the Institute of Plasma Physics in Hefei, marking a major milestone in fusion engineering.

Its role is to generate an extremely powerful magnetic field that can hold plasma exceeding 100 million°C in place without allowing it to touch the reactor walls. The system uses 16 superconducting coils arranged in a ring to create a 6.5 tesla magnetic field using technology developed in China.

China’s BEST experimental fusion reactor is planned for completion by the end of 2027, with the goal of demonstrating fusion power generation around 2030.

If successful, it could represent a major step toward making practical fusion energy a reality.
