On this day in 1937, Jim Londos defeated Johannes van der Walt before a reported 70,000 fans at Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. Londos was wrestling’s biggest box office attraction of the 1930s and among the most famous athletes of the Depression era, making the Athens crowd a homecoming for the Greek-born star. He won at the 78-minute mark with his famous airplane spin, retaining the belt he won from van der Walt in Johannesburg that January.
