Years ago I answered a 911 call and found a man at the top of a staircase with a noose around his neck. A bottle in one hand. A box cutter in the other. No gunman. No locked room. His captor was invisible, and it had held him for years.

I talked him back. Not by winning an argument. By being the calmest voice in the room, and by letting him know he wasn’t alone in the dark. I knew that dark. I lost my father to suicide when I was seventeen.

Here’s what I’ve come to believe. Almost everyone is carrying a noose of some kind. The job you can’t leave. The grief you won’t say out loud. The story in your head that says this is all there is. Most prisons don’t have bars.

This carousel is five things the room taught me about how people break free. Swipe through. Sit with the one that finds you.

And if you’re the one on the ledge right now, stay. Reach out. You are not as alone as the fear is telling you.

The Hostage Effect is out now.

If you’re struggling, call or text 988. It’s free, confidential, and open 24/7 in both the US and Canada. You don’t have to carry it alone.
