## Caption

One machine dispenses the solder paste. The same machine places the components. That single fact removes the largest bottleneck in prototype electronics.

Conventional surface mount assembly needs a stencil. A laser-cut steel foil, aperture-matched to your footprint, ordered alongside the board. Change one pad and the stencil becomes scrap. Dispensing deletes that step entirely by laying paste down volumetrically, one deposit at a time, from a syringe driven by a calibrated plunger.

The mechanics are less obvious than they look:

- Solder paste is a thixotropic suspension. Roughly half metal by volume, near 90 percent by mass, carried in flux. It shear-thins under the nozzle and stiffens the instant flow stops.
- Deposit volume is set by extrusion rate against traverse speed. The head moves at whatever velocity lays down the target bead. Slow it and the pad floods. Rush it and the joint starves.
- Standoff height matters as much as pressure. Too high and the bead breaks into satellites. Too low and the nozzle smears paste across the solder mask.

Placement is the second half. A vacuum nozzle lifts each part from cut tape, a camera measures its true position and rotation against the nozzle centreline, and the correction is applied before the part touches down. Without that vision step, tape tolerance alone would ruin fine-pitch work.

Then reflow does something remarkable. Molten solder wets the pads and surface tension drags the component into alignment. A part set down slightly crooked will centre itself. Physics corrects the machine.

Desktop systems place hundreds to a few thousand components per hour. Industrial lines clear fifty thousand. Speed was never the argument. Turnaround was.

The prototype worth building is the one finished before the idea goes cold.
