Yoko Matsumoto: ‘I wanted to paint the blue of the Mediterranean. After painting pink, green, white, and black, I knew next it absolutely had to be blue. And not as an accent or shadow. I wanted a bold, full field of cobalt blue. That was my intention when I began the blue paintings.⁠
