This is a warning for the women it is still working for.

Keto. Carnivore. Fasting. Eating far too little for far too long. It works, and that is the problem. It is how women end up in my practice with the hormones of a woman a decade older.

I am a functional nutritionist, 20 years in women’s hormones. This is the pattern I see more than any other.

She trains. She eats clean. She is the most disciplined person she knows. She found something that worked and did what disciplined people do. She kept going.

Cortisol takes over the job her food should be doing. A randomized trial in Psychosomatic Medicine put 121 women through three weeks. The group at 1200 calories a day had higher cortisol output. That clarity she is running on is borrowed.

Then her thyroid slows. In the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, adults restricting for years had significantly lower active thyroid hormone than people eating normally, and body fat did not explain it. Cutting carbs does it at the same calories.

When cortisol runs the show, everything downstream pays.

When it stops working she does not ask what her body is telling her. She doubles down. More fasting, fewer carbs, harder training.

By then she is frightened of food. Carbs most of all, because cutting them worked once. So when carbs come back and the scale moves, she panics. That is water. Muscle stores carbs as glycogen, and glycogen holds water. It is not fat. Trusting that is where most women quit.

The way back is not a reverse diet. This is the Hormone Stacking Method. It works on the systems underneath.

Reduce your toxic load.
Help your body feel safe.
Consistency, not just the good weeks.
Balance blood sugar so cortisol does not have to.
Protect sleep so you repair.
Eat enough for thyroid conversion.
Rebuild your gut so you absorb what you eat.

Something working for twelve weeks does not make it a lifestyle. In perimenopause, doing it too long does the exact opposite of what you started it for.
