As Tampa Bay enters camp with two of its top players unhappy about the business side of football, Bowles explains why a head coach cannot completely separate negotiations and personnel decisions from the team itself. The players still have jobs to perform, but the coach remains responsible for managing everything surrounding them.

Bowles also discusses the personal cost of changing a staff that included longtime friends. He explains why the changes were necessary, how those relationships survived and why decisions made in the best interest of an organization can still keep a coach up at night.

The conversation turns to Bowles’ reputation as one of football’s best player evaluators. Rather than beginning with what a player cannot do, Bowles looks for strengths that can be applied within a scheme—and avoids putting players in positions that expose their limitations.

Bowles also addresses Tampa Bay’s efforts to reduce soft-tissue injuries, the development of a key second-year offensive player, the installation of a new offensive system and another competitive NFC South race.
