Is there a black market reptile ring in New Jersey with ties to NYC? Law enforcement sources said that could be the case after more than 150 turtles were illegally dumped near the Rahway River.⁠

12-year-old Henning Schmidt showed pictures of three turtles he rescued in Cranford: two eastern box turtles, which are native to the state, and a non-native three-toed box turtle. Others who live in the area have reported seeing dozens. ⁠

Officials are asking for help recovering the turtles believed to have been dumped on the banks of the river on July 29th. The turtles are protected in the state.⁠

Any wayward turtles found should be carefully placed in a clean container and taken to the fire department, officials said. The reptiles will then receive treatment and care at a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center.⁠
