Two Arizona homes burned to the ground in one week, and in both cases crews were working without a hydrant nearby.

The most recent came Friday morning in Peoria. Rural Metro, Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix crews were called near 83rd Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road shortly after 5:30 a.m. The property sits on a county island, and Rural Metro’s Shawn Gilleland says some of those pockets don’t have hydrants, so crews have to find one close enough to tap and pull water in. The call was upgraded to a working first alarm to bring more resources. The house and the cars and trailer next to it are a total loss.

Four days earlier, Daisy Mountain crews arrived at a fully involved house near Central Avenue and Honda Bow Road in New River just before 5 a.m. Capt. Jensen Schell said debris around the property, several RVs, cars and a boat, kept his crews from getting into the spots they needed, and water in the area was limited. Also a total loss.

To be clear, neither department has said water supply is the reason either home was lost, and both causes are still undetermined. But it’s two houses in one week in county pockets outside city hydrant coverage.

The Peoria fire is still developing. Rural Metro says a woman was inside when it started and MCSO deputies are working to determine whether a second person was inside as well. Investigators noted suspicious circumstances they’ll be looking into. A firefighter was hurt but didn’t need the hospital.

If you live on acreage or in a county island, this is your reminder. Know where your nearest hydrant is, keep thirty feet clear around the structure, and keep a path a truck can actually get down.
