An 84 year old woman was taken out of her Tucson home six months ago and she’s still missing. On Friday, investigators released the ransom notes and told the public exactly what they need from us.

Nancy Guthrie was taken from her home in the Catalina Foothills on the night of January 31. She’s the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI Phoenix Field Office put out redacted copies of two notes that were emailed to KOLD News 13 in Tucson under the subject line “News Tip.” The sender’s name, email address, date of birth and the bitcoin address were all redacted.

The first note arrived in early February addressed to Savannah. It said her mother was safe but scared, demanded $4 million in bitcoin, and said she would be held a maximum of seven days.

Here’s the ask. Investigators say the writing carries distinctive patterns of word choice, syntax and phrasing that add up to a recognizable style, and they believe someone who knows this person or has communicated with them will recognize it. That’s why the notes are public now.

They also want people thinking back to late January and early February. Did someone in your life suddenly change their appearance, cut or dye their hair, grow or shave facial hair? Turn up with unexplained cuts on their hands or bruising? Miss work, classes or appointments they never miss? Leave town abruptly?

Two doorbell camera videos from Guthrie’s home, recorded on separate days, led investigators to conclude the crime was planned in advance. The suspect is described as a man around 5-foot-9 to 5-foot-10 with an average build, wearing black gloves and a black 25 liter Ozark Trail hiker pack.
