He was convicted in Tucson in 1992 and then vanished for more than 32 years. This month a judge sentenced him to 300 years in prison.

Daniel George Brewster was found guilty by a Pima County jury on 15 counts involving four children at a Tucson daycare where he worked. The charges included eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor, one count of attempted sexual conduct with a minor and six counts of child exploitation. The children were between 4 and 9. He had been arrested, released on bond, and never showed up for trial, so the case went forward without him.

What followed is likely the longest fugitive hunt in Arizona history. He lived under a false identity on fake documents and moved through Mexico, New Zealand, Australia and Canada. His case ran on America’s Most Wanted in 1995 and In Pursuit with John Walsh in 2020. The US Marshals Service took it over in 2015 and opened a global search.

Ukrainian National Police detained him in Kyiv Oblast last summer after work by the FBI and Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice. Deputy US Marshals traveled to Poland to take custody at the border and flew him back to Arizona on April 3. On July 17, Judge Kim Ortiz handed down consecutive sentences across two cases that mean he will not get out. As of this week he was still at the Pima County jail waiting on transfer to state prison.

One of the survivors has spoken publicly about the case for the first time this month.
