Phoenix Fire hoisted a man off the top of Mummy Mountain this morning. He drew Ariel, Aladdin, the Beast and Tarzan.

Glen Keane, 72, spent 38 years at Walt Disney Animation and got named a Disney Legend in 2013. In 2018 he won the Oscar for Best Animated Short with Kobe Bryant for “Dear Basketball.”

The part nobody outside the Valley knows is that he’s a Paradise Valley kid. His family moved there when he was five, his dad was Bil Keane who drew The Family Circus, and he climbed Mummy Mountain as a teenager.

He lives in France now and came back with his kids and grandkids so they could climb it too. He got to the top and that was it. His daughter and the grandkids were moving easy, then his legs started shaking, then his arms. Crews rigged a steep angle rope system and hoisted him into Firebird 10. He was alert the whole time and got evaluated after landing. No firefighters were hurt.

Capt. Todd Keller’s reminder for the rest of us. You can start at 7 in the morning and be in a 25 degree swing by 8:30. His words, do a gut check on whether it’s smart to be out there when it’s already 93 at seven.

Asked how he felt about the whole morning, Keane said at least now he’s got a great story for his wife.
