Tucson is seeing a record surge in possible bat exposures, with about 20 people seeking treatment at Tucson Medical Center in just one week.

Pima County health officials have handled 194 bat-related human exposures this year, and July’s numbers have already surpassed every previous monthly peak. Some patients received rabies vaccines as a precaution.

An exposure does not always mean someone was bitten. Recent cases have involved bats entering homes or being found in swimming pools. Because bat teeth are so small, a bite or scratch may go unnoticed.

Never touch a bat, dead or alive. If one enters your home, keep people and pets away and call Pima Animal Care Center to retrieve and test it. Anyone who may have had contact should seek medical guidance.

Have you noticed more bats around your neighborhood this summer?
