Music has a unique way of bringing people together like nothing else… 🌎👇

Before any of us could even speak, we were sung to. Even though we didn’t understand words, and our parents were probably off-key, it still did something to our nervous system. It made us feel like someone was present with us, someone who loves us.

Growing up, we make friends with other kids who share the same favorite artist or band, and memories are formed around those songs that the whole friend group knows the words to.

Concerts turn strangers into temporary friends, and old friends into something closer. Thousands of people agreeing to feel the same thing at the same time is a rare bonding experience. Singing a chorus at full volume with people you’ll never see again creates a strange, brief intimacy that’s hard to name but impossible to forget.

Almost every relationship you’ll ever have has its own soundtrack, too. There’s the playlist of songs you make for your crush, the one that becomes “our song,” and the ones that help you through the breakup. Then, they all become too potent to touch, evidence of how deeply music can fuse itself to memory and identity.

Even in illness, music’s connective power shows up in striking ways. People living with memory loss, who may no longer recognize family members, can sometimes still sing every word of a song from their youth, occasionally becoming animated and present again for the length of that song, in a way nothing else reaches.

At its core, music accomplishes godly things that nothing else does. It lets an internal, invisible experience, become shared and external. You can’t hand someone your emotions and say “hey, look at how I feel right now.” But you can play them a song, and for the length of that song, something real passes between you.
