Happy 25th birthday to Destroy Lonely, one of the defining artists of rap’s current generation 🦇

Long before Opium, Bobby Sandimanie was recording music at 14 alongside friends he met at school, including Nezzus. His name came from a genuinely dark period in his life: “Destroy” represented the substance abuse he felt was ruining him, while “Lonely” reflected the isolation he experienced growing up. He also had an unusually close view of the industry through his father, I-20, the Atlanta rapper known for his work with Ludacris and Disturbing tha Peace. 

Lone began building his own world through early projects and songs like “Bane,” but 2020’s Broken Hearts became the real turning point. The project’s hazy production, warped melodies and effortless fashion talk separated him from the louder rage sound developing around Atlanta. After the “Oh Yeah” video caught Playboi Carti’s attention, Lone signed to Opium in 2021 and spent the next year building almost unbearable anticipation for NO STYLIST. 

When the tape finally arrived, its title track became his breakout and helped prove Opium was developing its own genuine stars outside of Carti. Lone followed it with the darker, guitar-heavy world of If Looks Could Kill, complete with his “Look Killa” persona, horror-inspired visuals and a short film he helped direct. His music, clothes and mysterious presentation soon became inseparable, influencing an entire wave of artists who borrowed from his flows, vocal effects and gothic aesthetic. 

By 2024, LOVE LASTS FOREVER gave Lone his first Billboard 200 top 10 album and his first No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Now, after revisiting his cult-favorite Broken Hearts era and beginning the rollout for Drop Dead Gorgeous, he enters 25 still focused on building new characters, sounds and cinematic worlds around every release. 

From recording at school to becoming one of the most recognizable figures in modern underground rap, Destroy Lonely’s influence reaches far beyond the numbers. Happy birthday, Lone 🎂
