July 29 was Guru Purnima, a holiday observed across South Asia and the Himalayas to honor spiritual teachers and the wisdom they pass from one generation to the next.

Devotees may mark Guru Purnima by visiting temples and monasteries, making offerings, reciting prayers, and paying respect to teachers and lineage holders. In some Buddhist communities, the holiday also commemorates the Buddha’s first teaching for the benefit of all beings.

For the occasion, explore five paintings of teachers from Tibet and the Himalayas—from Shakyamuni Buddha and Padmasambhava to Buddhist and Bon lineage masters. These paintings show how teachers are remembered not only as individuals, but also as links in living lineages of guidance, study, and practice.
