At 19, Andrew Hawkins posted a letter to his hero, Bruce McAvaney, the voice of Australian sport, asking how one breaks into the industry. He didn't expect anything back, but a few weeks later he had a reply. A handwritten note from Bruce himself.

Sixteen years on, the two got to work side by side at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Andrew building the research behind Seven's coverage, Bruce using it to call the Games.

Andrew had spent years making his name in international racing before the biggest events in sport came calling. But the habit that got him there never changed - reach out, be genuine, and back yourself, even when no one knows your name yet.
