Maxon received a special honor from his band director: the “Ray of Sunshine” award. And he’s been shining even brighter since his family moved to Colorado.

While Maxon’s mom Rita was pregnant with him, doctors noticed his head was measuring large. After he was born, a scan revealed he had half of his brain and fluid buildup. From that moment, Rita and Steven, Maxon’s dad, made a powerful decision: They wouldn’t let a scan define their son’s life.

After multiple surgeries and a cerebral palsy diagnosis, Maxon began early therapies. While living in other states, his family struggled to find the activities and full school experience they knew he deserved. That all changed when Steven’s job and his new involvement with the CUBuffs brought their family to Colorado. Maxon’s care moved to Children’s Hospital Colorado, where he received the thoughtful care of orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sayan De and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist Dr. Joyce Oleszek.

From the very first visit, his parents noticed the difference. A multidisciplinary team. A clear plan. And a shared commitment to helping Maxon thrive at school, in therapy and in everyday life. Our team connected with Maxon’s school and found him activities in addition to his medical care. 

“They came in and immediately had a plan,” Steven says. “They were invested in his care and growth and willingness to try stuff. Showing they had a plan for my son was a first.” 

Today, Maxon’s parents say he has a busier life than anyone in the family. His schedule is packed with activities he loves from dancing and basketball to bowling and script writing. He’s competing in the Special Olympics for the third year in a row. Between therapy appointments and family basketball games at home, Maxon is doing more than anyone imagined. 

“I can’t even explain how he’s doing half of the stuff he’s doing,” Steven says. “It changed my whole perspective on life. I don’t know where he would be without moving here.”
