Jake was only 14 when he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — a condition most often seen in people over 40.

In eighth grade, Jake was a straight A student and a multisport athlete. He did it all, from lacrosse and track to cross country and skiing. But during his spring season, he started feeling pain in his right hip that became so severe, he couldn’t walk. He switched to crutches, thinking it was a hip flexor issue or dehydration. After weeks of uncertainty, an MRI changed everything.

Within minutes of the scan, Jake and his family rushed to the emergency department at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Doctors discovered blood clots stretching four feet from his stomach to his knees. He was diagnosed with DVT, a condition with dangerous blood clots that can break off and travel to the lungs or brain, causing life-threatening complications.

Jake underwent intensive treatment, including clot-busting medication, a thrombectomy to remove the clots and a stent in his pelvis. He also learned he has Factor V Leiden, a genetic condition that makes his blood more likely to clot. Over the next few months, Jake had multiple procedures and medications, but he never let it stop him.

Today, Jake is 17 and thriving. He’s in his junior year of high school, playing golf and basketball and skiing with his family. His parents share one message: Advocate for your child and trust your instincts.

“Although it’s never in the rearview mirror, we have a lot to thank Children’s Hospital Colorado, Dr. Z, Dr. Warren and the entire team for,” Jeff, Jake’s dad, says.
