Katie is one of one. One clinical trial, one drug, one survivor, one miracle. 

At just 2 years old, Katie got sick during a family dinner. After a blood test, she was diagnosed with stage 4 T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) — an extremely aggressive form of blood cancer. Katie’s parents were told that she may not make it through the night, let alone to treatment. 

At a local hospital in California, three rounds of chemotherapy brought temporary remission, but her cancer came back. A bone marrow transplant gave hope, until tests showed relapse. 

“They told my parents they could take me home to live out the rest of my life,” Katie says. 

Her dad refused to give up. He found an experimental drug so new it didn’t have a name. And only one pediatric center could provide it: Children’s Hospital Colorado and our Experimental Therapeutics Program, led by Dr. Lia Gore. 

Within two days, Katie was in Colorado. Fourteen days later, she was cancer-free. 

“They declared me a miracle,” Katie says. 

Now 23 years old, Katie is the only pediatric patient to survive cancer using that drug. After graduating from the University of Colorado, she knew she wanted to work in a hospital but wasn’t sure in what capacity. On Dr. Gore’s advice, she attended a medical assistant program and now works in the outpatient oncology unit here where she makes a difference for kids who are on a journey she knows well. 

“If I ever see that they’re having a hard time, I sometimes share my story to help them,” Katie says. “I enjoy being there.”
