One of the scariest moments of Zoie’s family’s life came when she was just 3 months old. On the road to Nebraska, in the middle of nowhere, Zoie began to turn blue and purple. The infant had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at just 2 weeks old, so her mother, Lindsey, assumed Zoie’s symptoms were related to her condition. 

They stopped at the nearest hospital, where the team determined she would need to travel by ambulance to Children’s Hospital Colorado. 

“I was thankful that we went to Children's because the nurses and doctors there right away realized it had nothing to do with her CF,” Lindsey says. “She was having seizures. That's not a good thing to hear, obviously, but we were in the right place at the right time.” 

Our experts diagnosed Zoie with both epilepsy and microcephaly — a condition that made her head smaller than average and can cause seizures. Zoie and her family, who live in Loveland, stayed in the hospital for a week dialing in treatment and medications to increase the time between her seizures. Still, Zoie’s seizures remained severe, sometimes lasting hours and requiring more time in the hospital. 

Over the years, the family established a medical home at Children’s Colorado and continued a care plan that managed both Zoie’s epilepsy and CF. Thanks to a diligent routine of the right medicines and vagus nerve stimulation, she has been seizure-free for five years. 

That has allowed Zoie to thrive. The 14-year-old is a social butterfly who enjoys adaptive skiing, unified basketball, horseback riding, dance (alongside her two sisters) and more. Zoie's story helps us remember why we recognize Epilepsy Awareness Month.
