Wyatt was born with the same form of dwarfism as his mom Lacey but experienced a medical issue she never imagined.

At 18 months old, he developed a cold that wouldn’t go away. They had a doctor's appointment scheduled, but both Wyatt’s dad, Thomas, and Lacey had a bad gut feeling. They stopped at our North Campus and found Wyatt wasn’t getting enough oxygen. After transport to our Anschutz Medical Campus, our experts found many respiratory viruses were attacking his lungs and causing his heart to go into overdrive. We intubated Wyatt and he went into cardiac arrest. Our experts put him on a machine that provides temporary support to his heart and lungs while Wyatt fought for his life.

“We were in a state of shock,” Lacey and Thomas say.

Wyatt went to the PICU and saw teams across the hospital in orthopedics, breathing, heart and ear, nose and throat. They found that Wyatt had pulmonary hypertension, which affects blood pressure in his arteries. With dwarfism, his short stature and smaller chest size restricted his lungs and heart. While our teams found what medications helped, his parents found resources throughout the hospital to stay positive, like access to our hoteling rooms and chaplain services.

“All the things that the hospital offered to help us get through that time were huge,” Thomas says.

Three weeks later, Wyatt went home with daily medications and oxygen therapy. Now in kindergarten, he's medication free and needs oxygen only occasionally, with regular follow-ups from our experts. He has big dreams of becoming a police officer and is an upcoming ambassador for Children's Hospital Colorado Foundation to help other kids like him.

“Having dwarfism myself, there weren’t accommodations in school,” Lacey says. “But with Wyatt, they have thought about things above and beyond — lowered a swing for him on the playground, a cart to push his oxygen, a special way to get his lunch. It’s been phenomenal. The team at Children's Colorado helped us get everything we need.”

During #DwarfismAwarenessMonth, we celebrate Wyatt — resilient, joyful and stronger than you can imagine.
