Amber Rose was a miracle from the beginning. 

When her mother, Jayne, didn’t feel any movement during her pregnancy, the first hospital she went to told her to find a mortuary. Miraculously, Amber Rose, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome, ended up surviving and was delivered via C-section. 

Their family was soon referred to us, where they found a care team that would help Amber Rose thrive. One doctor that supported Amber Rose in the early days of her life was former Director of the Sie Center for Down Syndrome Dr. Francis Hickey, who shared with Jayne his own experience of having a child with Down syndrome. 

 Though Dr. Hickey has since retired, Jayne is grateful for his support and care. 

“Being able to go to a place that I felt safe in, and talking to somebody who had a similar experience...I just didn’t feel alone, and I knew it was going to be OK,” Jayne says. “I walked in there feeling absolutely overwhelmed, and walked out of there feeling like, ‘OK, this is manageable.’ Just one day at a time.” 

Though Amber Rose continues to experience medical challenges associated with Down syndrome, her resilience, in combination with a dedicated care team, helps her get the most out of every day. 

Now, at age 13, Amber Rose has competed in the Special Olympics twice, playing both basketball and football in the games. She loves to sing in the car, draw pictures, and get the most out of life each day. 

For an individual that doctors didn’t think would live after birth, Amber continues to defy the odds as a patient, a daughter and a citizen of the world. In fact, Jayne credits Amber with changing her own perspective on life itself, showing not just what it means to overcome obstacles, but also what it means to be joyful in the face of them. 

“She’s taught me more about life than I'll ever be able to teach her,” Jayne says.
