Cody had a pommel horse in his hospital room. And it wasn’t just to pass the time by practicing his gymnastic routines or because our caregivers go to great lengths to let kids be kids.
 
He had a pommel horse in his hospital room because everything about his care was designed to help Cody be who he is today: a cancer survivor with big aspirations. 

Before he was diagnosed with a rare cancer called myelodysplastic syndrome at 9 years old, he dreamed of competing in a qualifying national competition for gymnastics. This year, he did just that, competing in the Western National Championships — and the pommel horse in the hospital helped him along the way.
 
“It’s a huge accomplishment from where he was physically right after treatment,” Cody’s mom, Kerrie Anne, says. 

Cody has also found immense joy in aeronautics school where he learns everything there is to learn about drones and planes, which includes playing drone soccer (it’s like Quidditch). He applies the same level of work and aspiration to aeronautics that he does to gymnastics, and it’s paid off. 

His drone soccer team just took third place in the U.S. Drone Soccer National Championships in New York. At only 15, he also obtained the Federal Aviation Administration’s Remote Pilot Certificate to operate a drone. In just a few months when he turns 16, he’ll be able to operate drones professionally.
 
This National Cancer Survivors Day, we celebrate the strength and determination of children and families who live and thrive in the face of their diagnosis. Kids like Cody don’t let anything stop them from reaching new heights — whether that’s with a drone, in gymnastics or in everyday life.
