At 5 years old, Drew began convulsing during sleep, speaking gibberish and staring off into space. When Drew had one of these episodes at his pediatrician’s office, the doctor diagnosed the event as a seizure. 

It took three years to find medications to manage his seizures, but the relief was short-lived. Drew’s seizures returned when he began puberty — a common experience for kids growing up with epilepsy. 

Amid these changes, his family relocated to Colorado in 2017. Drew’s family found the neurology team at Children’s Hospital Colorado, who put Drew on an aggressive treatment plan. 

This included a minimally invasive brain surgery called stereoelectroencephalography to pinpoint where Drew’s seizures were occurring. Then, the team performed radiofrequency ablation (RFA) surgery, which uses heat to target tissue causing the seizures. In the nearly two years since Drew’s surgery, he’s been seizure-free. 

Drew’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Allyson Alexander, is one of few pediatric surgeons in Colorado specializing in RFA for epilepsy. 

“Drew’s successful outcomes give me hope that this innovative procedure will continue helping many kids with epilepsy find relief and an improved quality of life,” Dr. Alexander says. 

Just before his surgery, Drew made a change that surprised and impressed his care team. Assured that he would not have to shave his head, Drew decided to dye his long hair bright blue. This playful move was a way to remember that despite the seriousness of his condition, he was still just a 15-year-old kid. 

“We've seen Drew change literally right before our eyes,” says Drew’s mom, Becky. “Before, it was always a risk — walking on eggshells all the time no matter where we went. Now we're able to let that guard down, breathe, sleep and live life to the fullest.”
