STEP 2: CONTROL THE NARRATIVE

It all started with an angry, unprofessional phone call—and a lie from the top.

On June 11, 2024, Sheriff Kim Stewart called us. She complained about her salary, insisted this was her career and not "just a hobby," and became angry when we repeatedly asked one simple thing:

Do your duty. Be professional.

She ended the call and immediately sent an email to her staff claiming that we had agreed to send all future reports directly to her.

That was false.

We still have the email.

Within minutes, we replied in writing:

➡️ We would continue reporting through dispatch. ➡️ We would not exclusively send our reports to her.

➡️ We expected deputies to respond to calls involving human remains.

Then something changed.

Over the following months, we reported six separate human remains sites.

Deputies Vargas, Johnston, and Pruitt repeatedly failed to respond or failed to recover reported remains. In one case, Deputy Vargas angrily told us he would not go.

Later, former deputies or their family members publicly alleged that deputies had been instructed not to respond to Battalion Search & Rescue reports involving human remains and that those reports were routed through the Sheriff instead.

Coincidence?

The public deserves an independent investigation—not excuses and deflection.

When one person controls the information... they can influence the response.

When they influence the response... they can shape the narrative.

And when the narrative replaces accountability...

Families wait.

Trust is lost.

The dignity of the deceased is diminished.

A county where reported human remains can go unrecovered for months and even over a year is a county that demands answers—not silence.
