“He gives snow like wool; he scatters frost like ashes. He hurls down his crystals of ice like crumbs; who can stand before his cold? He sends out his word, and melts them; he makes his wind blow and the waters flow.” -Psalm 147:16-18

Looking back upon a winter scene, we are reminded that the works of God surround us, even in the quiet and still places. The snow that blankets the earth, the frost that settles upon creation, and the ice that binds the waters are not random forces beyond His control. They are the works of His hand. God is present and active in His creation; He is not distant from what He has made. He continually sustains and orders it according to His purpose.

The LORD is not just warmth, growth, and abundance, but of cold, stillness, and contentment. His power is seen both in what overwhelms and in what gently sustains. The same God who sends the frost also brings the thaw. At His word, the frozen waters move again and creation responds.

When everything around us seems to be moving, growing, and flourishing, it is easy to believe that we should be moving too. We see growth, achievement, new beginnings, celebrations, and answered prayers in the lives of those around us, and we wonder why our own season feels quiet. Yet there is purpose in stillness. We often mistake stillness and silence for absence. We look for the obvious, the dramatic movements, the moments where His work is impossible to miss.Yet the LORD is always at work, not only in the seasons of visible growth, but also in the hidden places where He is strengthening, shaping, and drawing us nearer to Him. What appears quiet is not forgotten, what appears frozen is not beyond His reach. The same word that commands creation also renews and restores. He brings life where there appears to be none and causes what is held still to move again with vigor.

Praise the LORD, who rules over all creation. The God who commands the snow and the waters is the same God who holds us in His hands. Whether He is bringing the thaw or sustaining us through the stillness, His work is always purposeful.
