During the fifth inning of Philadelphia’s 6–3 victory over the Cubs in 2017, Nick Pivetta’s main focus was keeping Anthony Rizzo close to first base. The Phillies right-hander fired a pickoff throw to first in an attempt to make sure Rizzo wasn’t getting too big of a lead.

The effort turned out to be unnecessary, as Rizzo was standing firmly on the bag when Pivetta made the throw. With no chance of catching him off guard, the pickoff attempt served only as a reminder of how closely Pivetta was watching the runner.

A few pitches later, Pivetta tried again. This time, he nearly caught Rizzo leaning, and the first-base umpire initially called him out. However, after a replay review, the call was overturned, allowing Rizzo to remain safely at first.
