The J-School is well-represented in the Society of Professional Journalists Region 4 Mark of Excellence contest, with 10 winners and 23 total awards.

Alina Zhuravel won the COVID-19: Video Coverage (Large) 10,000+ Students category for "We had to leave ASAP." Katie Birecki was a finalist in the same category for “Churches and coronavirus: how one local church is taking precautions.”

The Focal Point staff won Best All-Around Television News Magazine category for its Special Edition 12/4/20. Focal Point also won the Best All-Around Television Newscast for its October 30th entry.

Mikayla Temple was the winner of the Broadcast Feature Videography category for “A sound to soldier on.” Joe Freihofer was a finalist the same category for "Talking about yesterday or tomorrow?"

Two more Spartans were recognized in Broadcast News Videography. Ian Gilmour was the Winner for “They've been waiting for this day.” Alexis Ayala was a Finalist for “High School Football Teams Tackle COVID-19.”

Freihofer was both the Winner and a Finalist in Broadcast Sports Videography. He won for “All You Need Is A Set Of Wheels... And One Of These” and was a Finalist for "I just don't know when."

A pair of Spartan entries also were recognized in Television Breaking News Reporting. Brandon Rothenberg was a Finalist for “A legendary coach steps down.” The trio of Gilmour, Freihofer and Sam Britten was a Finalist for “The Loss of a Legend.”

Two more Spartans were honored in Television Feature Reporting. Freihofer was the Winner for "Talking about yesterday or tomorrow?" while Temple was a Finalist for “A sound to soldier on.”

Three Spartans were recognized in the Television General News Reporting category. Freihofer was the Winner for "This is a once-in-a-lifetime event," Temple was a Finalist for “No more screams for Dairy Store ice cream,” and Britten was a Finalist for “Taking another crack at fixing Michigan roads.”

The Television In-Depth Reporting category brought three more Spartans honors. 
Katie Schroeder and Lea Mitchell’s entry was the Winner for “House of Soles.” Regan Holgate and Taylor Golden-Wise were Finalists for “It’s not what we expected our freshman year to be like” while Shade Moore was also a Finalist for “#ENDSARS.”

Television Sports Reporting saw another Spartan trifecta.  Freihofer was the Winner for "I just don't know when." Brandon Rothenberg was a Finalist for “What it's like to have your dream job on pause.” Freihofer was also a Finalist for “All You Need Is A Set Of Wheels... And One Of These.”

Each winner moves on to the SPJ national contest. Congratulations to all the Winners and Finalists.
