It’s time for this week’s #Five4Friday! Meet McKenna Ross, a reporter at MLive, from the School of Journalism class of 2019.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

I've really enjoyed talking to people in different communities. I cover local governments in Washtenaw County and it's amazing to hear how many similar and different problems can happen in a small region. It's exciting to get to know what matters most to different groups and what is affecting them.

Q: How did your experience at the J-School prepare you for your career?

J-School classes were particularly helpful honing skills beyond the story. Yes, I learned the WWWWWH and inverted pyramid, but I also learned how to search for intriguing details, use multimedia to my advantage and be on social media to promote my stories. I also refer to media law and ethics lessons often because public records can be tricky.

Q: What excites you about the future of journalism?
People need information and truth more than ever. Misinformation is so easy to spread and our role is being elevated to a fact-checker. Establishing trust and proving our reporting strategies will progress journalism and prove how vital it is to democracy and society at large. The more people see journalism as a public service, the better our future industry will be.

Q: What do you miss most about MSU, and what do you do to keep yourself connected to the Spartan community?

I miss Crunchy's, Beaumont Tower and The State News office building -- but I REALLY miss the people I made memories with at those places. Thankfully, the internet makes connections easier than ever. I'm still in contact with my college friends and I love following The State News to read what's happening and cheer MSU journalists on.
 
Q: What advice do you have for our students preparing for their final exams?  

Use final projects as ways to prove what new skills you've learned. It may be hard when everything is so busy, but plenty of final projects in J-School classes can be excellent clips.
