Mid-day On-Air Personality 
WTLZ-FM (Kiss 107.1), Alpha Media Saginaw 

Q: Tell us a bit about your job as an on-air personality! 
A: I am the current midday on-air host for Kiss 107.1, which is an Urban Contemporary (R&B) station, serving Michigan's Great Lakes Bay Region (Saginaw, Midland, Bay City). Believe it or not, a lot goes into this role. In addition to my on-air work, I also do a lot behind the scenes. I do a lot of production work for the station, including dubbing and editing promo spots, managing our web content, managing social media content, and remote appearances in our area. 

Q: How did you choose to pursue a career in radio? 
A: It actually started in high school. I've always had a passion for music since childhood. Growing up in the Detroit area, it was a major part of our neighborhood, and I was always looking to pursue something within that area. The broadcasting part came when I joined the high school broadcast club, working on the school's morning announcements. After doing that for a while and developing a knack for it, the choice was made clear to me. I started more music journalism publications (Rolling Stone, Billboard, etc.) and listened to radio more actively. By the time I reached college, I had a clear path in mind. 

Q: How has your M.A. in JRN helped you in your career? 
A: It helped me better prepare for the competitive aspects of this business. It's not just about having a great personality. Almost everyone can have that, but to make it in radio, you have to set yourself apart to stand out. You have to have experience in almost all aspects of radio. You have to have experience in production, understand your audience, and coming up with creative ideas to keep your audience intrigued. MSU's Journalism Program helped me understand that this business is more than just speaking into a microphone. It's about providing a narrative that will keep the listener coming back to hear more, and it's about having the necessary tools needed to bring that narrative to life. 

Q: What advice do you have for current students who want a career in radio?
A: My advice is to be well-rounded, not just in broadcasting, but in all aspects of journalism. It's no longer how it was a decade or so ago, when you could stay in one lane comfortably and that's that. To be an effective journalist, you have to have your hand in everything. And with everything being fast-paced, you have to be prepared in all places. You have to be ready to face the unexpected and take risks. Also, you have to be unafraid to make mistakes and learn from them. That is what helped me to become successful in this business so far, and I'm still learning every day. 

Q: What do you miss most about MSU?  
A: I would say being involved with Impact 89FM - WDBM is what I miss most about MSU. Being around the station and hosting The Cultural Vibe, being allowed to express myself through music, and connecting with the listeners is what helped my passion for radio grow. Also, being mentored by amazing staff such as Dr. Geri Alumit Zeldes and Prof. Joe Grimm definitely helped me reach out farther into this business and not being afraid to take chances. Reaching my dream job here at Kiss 107.1 would have never happened if it wasn't for the support system I had at MSU and the JRN program. I'm grateful for that, indefinitely.
