It's #Five4Friday!

Jake Atnip
B.A. 2016
Sports Writer, Traverse City Record-Eagle

Q: What do you love about your job as a sports writer?
A: The best part about my job as a sports writer is that my work never becomes dull, boring or repetitive. I get to tell a new story, go to a different event or game and meet new people every single day. With my job, I am exposed to new experiences and challenges frequently and I have never felt like the work day drags on…there is always something going on and always something to do in this field! I always look forward to going to work which is not something most people can say!

Q: How did the J-School prepare you for your career?
A: I use skills that were taught to me in the MSU J-School on the job every minute of every day! I use the news judgment, writing and interviewing skills, audio editing and research skills that I learned in my time at MSU. They taught me how to be prepared for
my career and I fall back on my education regularly.

Q: How was your study abroad experience?
A: It was an absolute honor to be a part of the first ever sports journalism study abroad. I spent the last semester of my undergrad with some of the best people and professors (shout out Joanne C. Gerstner and Lori Anne Dickerson) in some of the most beautiful cities in the world (Paris and Rome). The experience was unlike any other and taught me so much about myself and my abilities. Taking that leap of faith made it much easier to transition into post-grad life because nothing is as shocking as a couple of months in a different world! If you have the chance…you MUST study abroad.

Q: What advice do you have for students for finals?
A: The biggest piece of advice I can give Spartans getting ready for finals week is DON’T STRESS IT TOO MUCH. Over-thinking and lack of planning lead to stress which will be the biggest hindrance to the goals you want to achieve. Plan ahead and take your time and remember that finals week isn’t the end of the world!

Q: And finally, how is Northern Michigan treating you?
A: Northern Michigan is absolutely beautiful and has welcomed me with open arms! Living only minutes from Grand Traverse Bay definitely has its benefits and feels like my own little slice of heaven. I am so honored to be able to cover all of the wonderful high schools and professional athletes that are proud to call northern Michigan their home. Don’t sleep on the teams from up north!
