Q: Tell us about your career path in the nonprofit sector.
My interest in the nonprofit sector actually began with my participation in MSU's Study Away Program in Washington, D.C. I always had an interest in advocacy and that led to my time as a Publications & Magazine intern with the Human Rights Campaign. During that time, I figured out how I could couple my journalism education with my interest in mission-driven work. I love being able to apply everything I learned in J-School to advancing the mission of causes that I'm passionate about.
 
Q: How has your experience at the J-School helped you in your career?
The J-School allowed me to learn a little bit of everything. Throughout my professional career, I've been able to apply the skills I've gained in photography, audio storytelling, video, writing, editing, and even publication design. I was equipped with a wide arsenal of skills that really allowed me to be a strong applicant as well as a very versatile employee. I also think the emphasis on professional development prepared me for interviews and crafting my resume and pitch.
 
Q: How was your study abroad experience with MSU?
My study abroad experience was great! I studied Photo Communication in the UK, Czech Republic and France. It allowed me to gain a better perspective of the world around me and fueled my current love for travel. 

Q: You've been gone from MSU for four years, what do you miss most?
I miss the accessibility of learning opportunities that were offered on campus through student groups or student publications. There was always something to be involved in. I also think I took how beautiful campus was for granted as realize how much I miss seasonal activities in Michigan.
 
Q: What advice do you have for our current journalism students?
Be open to opportunities that weren't always on your radar. I was set in my thinking that I'd work at a media outlet, but I've found that my skill set fits perfectly with the roles I've had in nonprofit communications. The J-School really sets you up with a great set of skills that will apply to a range of jobs.
