Q: How did you choose to come to MSU for J-School? 
A: I had known since I was 4 years old that MSU was where I wanted to go to school. Not through any family influence, that was just a decision I had made at all of 4 years old, so all throughout my schooling the goal was to get into MSU. Journalism was something that came to me as I was applying for colleges. I have always loved to write, it’s a huge outlet for me. I also love to read and learn as much as I can about other people’s life journeys and how they got to where they are or why they may make certain decisions or believe what they do. I also love sports, So the J-School seemed like an opportunity for me to combine all my interests, as well as get the opportunity to gain experience and skills in a wide variety of outlets.

Q: Tell us about your job as a marketing and social media guru; what do you like most about it?
A: What I like most about my job is the wide variety of things I get to do. I create social media posts, shoot and edit video, create and upload content to our website, track all our marketing using spreadsheets and graphs and I get to interact with people every day. This job has given me a chance to use the skills I gained at MSU as well as learn new ones that I would have never thought I would have needed.

Q: How did your experience at the J-School prepare you for this career? 
A: I will always owe a large part of both things I did while I was in school and everything I have done and will do in my career to MSU and the J-school. I have had hands on experience in so many different aspects of journalism because of the J-school that when I graduated it was really up to me which direction I wanted to take my career in, and while I feel like I’m still figuring it out, I have so many more options available to me because of the experience I gained and people I met while at MSU and in the J-school. I will forever be grateful for everything this program and this school gave to me.

Q: What was the biggest challenge you overcame during your time at MSU?
A: I would say the biggest thing I had to overcome at MSU was getting out of my own way. I had to learn that it was OK to fail, it was OK to try things and not like them. I find the confidence within myself to believe in my skills and be willing to put myself out there to have experiences that were not only going to help me in my career, but just in life in general. Once I was able to do that the doors were wide open.

Q: What is the most important piece of advice you can give to current JRN students?
A: The biggest piece of advice I can give is try everything! I had a couple different professors at MSU tell me “you can’t win if you don’t play” and that is absolutely true. To get what you want you must take chances and you never know, you may end up doing something you love that you never could have imagined yourself doing. It’s scary, especially when you first graduate, and it may take serval tries before you find what you are truly meant to do, but the J-school provides so many opportunities, that if you just keep following your instinct the right opportunity will come along, or maybe it will be one you create for yourself.
