Q: Tell us about your job as a news writer. What do you love most about it?
A: As a news writer I have the opportunity to do many things every morning. I write news stories, work with reporters, make presentations for anchors to discuss during the morning newscast, help with breaking news, edit videos and so much more. Being a news writer gives me the chance to learn how to do everything, which is what I truly enjoy. I think it’s important to learn how to do as much as you can so you can help whenever needed. My favorite thing is that I get to do so much every day. I don’t have a day where I’m not juggling a lot, but I always feel great when a segment I produced gets on the air and looks perfect.
 
Q: How has your experience at MSU helped you in your career?
A: My experience at MSU has really helped shape my career. In fact, I actually didn’t become a journalism major until my third year of college. Once I realized my passion as a journalist, it helped me narrow my focus to editorial reporting. MSU also has the best professors. They are extremely passionate about the students’ success and it shows when they teach their classes.
 
Q: What do you like to do outside of work?
A: Outside of work, I like to work on my online blog, Alexis University. (https://alexisuniversity.com/) I started the blog as a way to connect with high school and college students. My mission statement for is to educate, inform and promote scholarship through personal experience.  On my blog site I have a weekly success series where I talk about different topics related to how to be successful. Some of those topics include setting SMART goals, explaining what being successful really means, finding a major in college and many more. I also write blog posts that explain different personal experiences I had during college such as whether going to class is really important, getting your first roommate, getting involved on campus and more.
 
Q: You had quite a few internships during your time at MSU. What advice about internships do you have for current students?
A: Internships are extremely important when it comes to a career in journalism. During my time at Michigan State I interned with Big 10 Network, HOMTV, ing Magazine, and other online blogging sites. Each internship helped me understand what it was like to be a professional journalist. In this career field, hands on experience is crucial to being successful in the workplace.  My internships taught me news writing for print and broadcast, basic editing skills, and how to work behind the scenes. Essentially I can work anywhere in the newsroom because of my internships.
 
Q: What do you miss most about MSU?
A: The thing I miss most about MSU is the community. Everybody in the journalism department is really focused on the success of the students.  The faculty and staff helped shaped me into the professional journalist I am today. The classroom setting helps prepare you for those internships which then help you prepare for a real life job.
