23 years ago today, Beyonce released ‘Baby Boy’ featuring Sean Paul.

"Baby Boy" came together as the second single from Beyoncé's debut solo album, 'Dangerously in Love,' with Sean Paul flying in from Jamaica to record his verse after Beyoncé personally reached out about a collaboration. Producer Scott Storch worked alongside Beyoncé on the track, drawing rhythmic inspiration from Ini Kamoze's 1994 hit "Here Comes the Hotstepper" to give the song its distinctly Caribbean pulse. The two finished recording together that March, during the later stages of the album's production, with additional writing credits going to Robert Waller and Jay-Z.

Sonically, the track blends dancehall and R&B with Middle Eastern and Indian musical influences, a combination critics praised for its adventurous, genre-crossing sound. Jake Nava, who'd already directed Beyoncé's "Crazy in Love" video, filmed the "Baby Boy" visual in Miami that August, splitting scenes between Beyoncé and Paul and incorporating an elaborate belly-dancing sequence that E! Online later ranked among her best music video moments. Rolling Stone would go on to praise the song's "global pulse and magnetic chemistry" in a retrospective ranking years later.

The song became a massive commercial success, spending nine consecutive weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, a record that stood as Beyoncé's longest-running number one until "Irreplaceable" surpassed it in 2007. It also reached number two in the UK and earned platinum certification from the RIAA, along with double-platinum status in Australia. As one of the earliest hits to pair a major American pop star with a leading dancehall artist, "Baby Boy" helped set a template for Caribbean-infused collaborations that would become increasingly common across pop and R&B in the years that followed.
