'Bidi Bidi Bom Bom' was released as the second single from Selena's fourth studio album, 'Amor Prohibido', through EMI Latin. She co-wrote the song with backup vocalist and dancer Pete Astudillo, originally sketching it out in Spanish as a playful tune about a cheerful fish swimming freely in the ocean — before her brother, producer A.B. Quintanilla III, stepped in to help shape it into something bigger, arranging the track with Roger Emerson. A.B. later admitted he'd actually wanted this song to be the album's lead single rather than the title track 'Amor Prohibido,' but Selena and EMI Latin overruled him, pushing 'Amor Prohibido' out first instead.

The song blends Mexican cumbia with rock en español and reggae influences, built around electric guitar riffs and percussion inspired by Colombian and Caribbean rhythms, giving it an unusually diverse sound for Tejano radio at the time. Its title itself is an onomatopoeic phrase meant to capture the fluttering heartbeat of someone falling for the object of their affection, and the song was recorded at AMEN Studios in San Antonio back in 1993.
