12 years ago today, Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj released ‘Bang Bang.'

Through Republic Records, serving as the lead single from Jessie J's third album, 'Sweet Talker', and later added to the deluxe edition of 'Grande's My Everything.' Max Martin, Savan Kotecha, and Rickard Göransson wrote and produced the track — the same production trio behind Grande's earlier hit 'Problem' — with Minaj also credited as a co-writer. The twist: the song was originally written for Grande, who reportedly hated her own recording of it, prompting a Republic Records executive to bring in Jessie J and Minaj instead. When the label finally worked up the courage to send Grande the reworked version, she immediately wanted back in, insisting on adding her own verse.

Accounts differ on how Minaj joined: Jessie J has said Minaj heard the track in the studio and asked to jump on it, while Minaj publicly disputed that version on Twitter, denying she'd asked to be included that way. Once assembled, the trio recorded their parts separately across three studios — Jessie J in London, Grande in Los Angeles, and Minaj in Burbank — blending pop, pop-soul, and bubblegum influences into a horn-driven, high-energy anthem. The song marked the first all-female collaboration in music history to be certified diamond, and the Hannah Lux Davis-directed video, filmed over two days that July, placed each singer in her own vivid, stylized set before uniting them for the final chorus atop a Los Angeles rooftop.

'Bang Bang' reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, hit number one in the UK — Minaj's first-ever UK chart-topper, Grande's second, and Jessie J's third — and picked up a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. It's remained a staple of pop culture since, appearing in Just Dance 2015 and getting revived live when Grande and Minaj performed it together during the Sweetener World Tour at Coachella, cementing its place as one of the decade's defining girl-power pop anthems.
