LSU had absolutely NO business beating Florida in 2020 😭

Just one season removed from an undefeated season and national championship, the Tigers failed to replicate their 2019 success. After losing nearly their entire roster to the NFL, the Tigers stumbled into December with a 3-5 record and riding a two-game losing streak.

Meanwhile, No. 6 Florida was in the middle of one of its best seasons under Dan Mullen. Led by eventual Heisman finalist Kyle Trask, the Gators were 8-1 and needed just one more win to clinch the SEC East before facing Alabama in the SEC Championship.

The game remained close into the fourth quarter, but with under two minutes remaining and the score tied at 34, LSU appeared content to let the clock run.

Then came one of the most infamous moments in college football history.

After a short Tigers completion on third-and-long, Florida’s Marco Wilson celebrated the stop by throwing LSU tight end Kole Taylor’s shoe down the field, drawing a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

LSU immediately moved into field goal range, and Cade York drilled a 57-yard kick through the fog to give the Tigers a stunning 37-34 victory.

Florida’s College Football Playoff hopes vanished with the upset. The Gators would also fall to Alabama the following week and capped off the season with a loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, finishing just 8-4.

LSU closed the season 5-5, but the “shoe game” remains one of the wildest upsets of the decade.
