This was our first post, twelve years ago: A green turtle enjoys a meal of seagrass in a sheltered bay in the Abrolhos Marine Protected Area of Brazil.

It’s incredible how far we’ve come since then!

Our co-founders, PaulNicklen and Mitty, first started their careers as marine biologists, but realized the science was already there. The problem was that no one was listening. They later became photojournalists with NatGeo. It was a step in the right direction, but it would take years for a story to reach publication — a pace they felt was too slow for the fast-moving world of conservation.

Instagram gave them the outlet they were looking for. Over time, SeaLegacy became proof that blending storytelling, art, and science can create change. But the digital world is changing fast, with clickbait headlines, algorithms, AI, and whiplash-inducing politics. That’s why we’ve started a Substack account, where we can dive into the stories we really want to tell.
