The best settings to use for moving animals vary based on the animal you’re photographing, but this guide will help you determine which settings you should use.

First, I’ll usually open my aperture all the way to let in the most light and create the most background blur.

Next, I’ll adjust my shutter speed. 1/1000 is fast enough to freeze most wildlife, but if you’re shooting an animal that moves quickly or erratically, 1/2000 may be safer. Additionally, when photographing birds, you may need an even faster shutter speed to capture shots in flight.

Finally, I set my ISO to properly expose the scene. Raise the ISO as needed to properly expose your subject.

Then I’ll also adjust my focus mode and focus area, and make sure my subject recognition is set to animal.

Hopefully that helps you dial in your camera settings to capture tack-sharp wildlife images!
