China just built the largest fusion magnet ever made.

The 582-ton toroidal field magnet can store nearly three times more energy than any magnet used inside ITER, the massive 35-country fusion project being assembled in France.

It has now passed full-parameter testing at the Institute of Plasma Physics in Hefei.

Its job is extreme.

The magnet must suspend plasma heated beyond 100 million degrees Celsius without letting it touch the reactor walls.

Sixteen giant coils will eventually form a ring capable of producing a 6.5-tesla magnetic field, using technology developed in China.

The magnet is being built for the BEST experimental fusion reactor, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Its bigger goal is even more ambitious.

China is targeting its first demonstration of fusion power generation around 2030.
