Jay Feely’s football career is behind him, but now he’s on one of the biggest stages for the world to view outside of sports. The former NFL kicker won the Republican primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District and will now face Democrat Amish Shah in November. I wanted to share this informative sports meme because of the funny backstory behind it. These two crossed paths in the NFL. Shah served as the team doctor for the New York Jets during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, when Feely was kicking for the NY Jets led by quarterback Mark Sanchez, Darrelle Revis, Nick Mangold, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Thomas Jones, Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Dustin Keller, Bart Scott and NFL head coach Rex Ryan.

Before arriving in New York City, Feely had one of the longest careers of any NFL players, playing for the Atlanta Falcons, New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Philadelphia Eagles, and eventually finishing with the Arizona Cardinals. He played with many football players across the league, from Michael Vick and Tiki Barber to Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Carson Palmer, and Patrick Peterson. Now Feely and Shah will meet in a different scenario. They will battle it out in Arizona’s congressional race. It’s one of those rare sports and politics stories that I wanted to share with Instagram users.
