A 10-year-old boy from Japan has been praised by scientists after turning a childhood observation into a genuine scientific discovery.

After noticing the butterflies he raised seemed to recognize him, Jo Nagai designed a home experiment to test whether they could remember experiences from their time as caterpillars.

Working with a Georgetown University entomologist, his findings provided evidence that those memories can survive metamorphosis, with early results also suggesting they may even be passed on to the next generation.
