A California native from Fresno, Tanner spent his childhood playing baseball and growing a love for the game. After an impressive high school career, Tanner committed to play college baseball at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Tanner entered his collegiate career as an outfielder and hitter, but an injury quickly changed the direction of his path. After redshirting his freshman year due to injury, Tanner moved around the diamond, trying to find the position where he could thrive the most. After several different opportunities, including returning to the outfield and even catching, Tanner ultimately decided to focus on pitching. For the remainder of his time at Cal Poly, he developed into the consistent closer for the Mustangs, posting impressive numbers and making major strides on the mound.

With one more year of college eligibility and hoping to someday get the call that every player dreams of in July, Tanner attended graduate school at Texas Christian University and pitched for the Horned Frogs in the Big 12. While in Fort Worth, Tanner continued refining his pitching arsenal and worked to position himself as a standout prospect heading into the MLB Draft.
